I’ve spent half the year so far writing.

I’ve been keeping a daily writing log since the beginning of the year, writing down how many words I do each day, and what I worked on that day. Now that the year is half over, I thought my writing stats might be interesting.

Out of 181 days so far:

  • 61 days were spent writing The Spiral Dilemma 93,725 words)
  • 25 days were spent writing Milaan of the Mind (19,137 words)
  • 4 days were spent writing Noah Vale (3147 words… I’ve only just started)

That’s 90 days out of 181 that I have written. So basically I spent half my time writing, half my time bludging

That’s not bad, when I think about it, but I’d like it to me more. So I hereby vow, as a new half year’s resolution, the stats for the second half of the year will be above half!

What I’m Writing

As of recently I was writing Milaan of the Mind, which is the sequel to The Spiral Dilemma. ‘Dilemma’ is the completed fantasy novel that I am currently sending to publishers and agents (which is a whole other post).

The trouble is, ‘Milaan’ just refuses to come together. I like to have everything planned out before I start writing. Its like going on a holiday, I need to know where I’m going and how I’m going to get there before I begin to pack. But I just can’t get the ending worked out! I know everything that will happen in Milaan, up to the ending, and that’s where I stall. It’s like there’s some mental wall in my head stopping me from thinking anything related to a great ending to this book.

So to give myself a break, I’m putting ‘Milaan’ aside and writing something completely different. If and when ‘Dilemma’ is published, I will pick up Milaan again and write the second book. But the way I see it, it could be a while before anyone publishes it, so I can take my time and write some other things.

So the new ‘What I’m Writing’ is Noah Vale. Noah Vale is a story about a troubled man who hears voices. While out on a picnic with his sister’s family, his niece goes missing. It is set in Sydney, Australia, with supernatural elements (everything I write has supernatural elements :D ). The way I see it, I could write a whole series of books about Noah Vale, but unlike fantasy novels, there doesn’t need to be any over-aching storyline. I can just take one story at a time. I’m not sure how long this first story will be, but I’m trying not to worry about it. Quality not quantity, as they say.

10 Thoughts on Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360)

1. I have heard a lot of people describe this as a perfect game, but like Dragon Age: Origins, I really don’t get it. Its a fun game, but far from perfect. Things like excessive load times, extremely boring planet mining, and robotic characters with no emotion bring it down.

2. The graphics are exactly the same as Mass Effect 1, which while not being a bad thing, is not a good thing either. I had exected at least a small improvement, but some of the locations look like they’re taken exactly from the first game.

3. The story feels like they forgot to add a middle. Granted, I haven’t finished the game yet, but so far its a collection of 12 short stories, with nothing to link them all together apart from needing their help with some vague threatening aliens. And considering you can only take 2 people with you at a time, why is it so important you gather a crew so large?

4. The gameplay is fun. They have gotten rid of the horrible inventory system, and really streamlined everything to make the action flow more smoothly.

5. It’s a roleplaying game, but they seem to have forgotten the role play. There are a few instances where they force Sheppard to do things, rather than let you decide to do it yourself. Such as, instead of saying “Hey there’s a serious threat here, what are you going to do about it?”, they say “Oh by the way you just abandoned everything you were doing and flew over to this planet to help these people.” I don’t like having control taken away from me, and I don’t like being told what my character has done, without me deciding to do it myself.

6. The aliens are better designed than the humans. The aliens look fantastic, whereas the human characters look very robotic. They look like animatronic robots you’d see at theme-parks. The only emotion is in their voice, and even then only occasionally. Soem facial expressions would have been nice.

7. The environments are great and varied. Nothing like the first game, where many of the planets would have the exact same layout, over and over and over. So far, in ME2 nothing has been repeated, which I like.

8. I played half the game before I remembered that I forgot to import by game from ME1. After doing that, I realised it really didnt’ change much at all. Occasionally you will meet people from the first game, and they referenced stuff I don’t even remember doing (because ME1 was a while ago). It feels like the whole ‘import your game from ME1′ is just a gimmick that, in the end, had no importance at all.

9. I already mentioned it in #1, but mining is boring and stupid. I miss the way it was in the firt game. Scan a planet, automatically get all the resources from that planet. Now you have to manually search all over the plane for any resources it might have. I am mystified as to why they made it that way. They couldn’t possibly have thought it would be fun. It just seems to random, wierd, and completely and utterly boring.

10. Overall, yes its a fun game, but its nowhere near perfect. But then, what game is?

10 Thoughts about Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360)

1. It’s a great looking game, the graphics are really beautiful, particularly sunrise.

2. I’m normally not a fan of western’s, but this game is fun enough to make me forget that.

3. There’s an ‘honour’ system. If you do good deeds, you get positive honour. Bad deeds earn you negative honour. But, it’s a little too easy to accidentally do a bad deed.

4. On normal difficulty there is auto-targetting, but occasionally it will auto-target an innocent civilian, which leads to accidental negative honour, as I mentioned in 3.

5. I haven’t finished the story yet, but its good enough to keep me interested. Pretty straight forward, but told in an interesting way. The main character, John Masden, is pretty mysterious, and you only discover his history when he tells other people, so in that way you are kind of put in the position of a bystander in the world, even though you’re playing as him. It’s an interesting way to tell a story.

6. Riding a horse is fun. There are quicker forms of travel, such as stage-coaches and trains, but I like to ride my horse anyway cause its relaxing.

7. There are random world events which pop up as you ride about the world, such as stage-coaches being attacked, or bandits trying to steal your horse, but after a while it gets old, and I just ignored them and rode right past.

8. As well as the storyline missions, there are stranger missions too (small missions given to you by strangers), which are fun.

9. I’m not a big gun enthusiast, but the weapons feel nice and the combat is fun. ‘Dead Eye’ is a bullet-time-esque mode where you can slow down time to aim properly, comes in handy a lot.

10. There is a lot to do, as well as the storyline missions and stranger missions, there are outfit quests and challenges to keep you occupied. I haven’t tried the multiplayer yet, but it promises to be fun.

10 Thoughts on Alan Wake (Xbox 360)

1. The story is the BEST story I’ve seen in a game for a long time.

2. The graphics are amazing. You can see for miles, the nights are creepy, and the days are simply beautiful.

3. There is not enough day-time exploring in the game. I enjoyed driving around in the daylight, even if nothing happened. You just don’t do it often enough.

4. The atmosphere is very very creepy. There were many times when I thought I saw a ‘Taken’ in front of me, but it turns out to be the sillouette of a bush or tree.

5. I got a lot of ‘surprise’ type shocks, even on my second and third playthrough when I knew what to expect, the Taken still managed to burst out and surprise me.

6. The combat is simple but fun, although I would say there is a little too much ammo. Even on Nightmare difficulty, I was still reaching the ammo limit.

7. I really hope this turns into a multi-game franchise!

8. The book that came with the Collector’s Edition “The Alan Wake Files, compiled by Clay Steward” is cool. It mainly provides a little more detail on Agent Nightingale.

9. I cannot wait for the two DLC’s to come out!

10. The ending is WIERD.

The Half Draft

I’ve been writing the sequel to The Spiral Dilemma for a few weeks now, and finding the first draft pretty hard to write. I think its because I’ve been revising The Spiral Dilemma for so long, I’m still in that mode of changing what’s there, rather than writing completely new stuff. I know that once I have something finished, no matter how good or bad it is, I can work on it, and mould it into something good.

So instead of working on the first draft, I’ve decided that what I’ve been actually doing is writing the ‘half-draft’. At the moment I have a list of the scenes, and details (in point form) of what happens. So I’m basically taking those points and writing a sentence or two, in some cases a few paragraphs, about what happens. Then once I get a sort of simple narrative of what happens, I can work on it to produce a proper first draft.

I think at the moment I’m placing too much importance on the words I put down. The quality of my writing, at this point, doesn’t matter, because I will be revising it two or three times anyway. For me, its easier to change what’s there rather than write new material.

Hence, I’m writing my half-draft. It’ll flow more quickly since its only a half-draft, because I won’t worry about it so much. Also btw, I’m just past chapter 3, and planning on 20 chapters. I’m doing just about a chapter a week, but hoping to increase that a bit as time goes on.

But first, I’ve got to in the ‘write-new-material’ mode.

Zora Armour Link from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (unfinished)

Link, wearing Zora Armour, is from the Nintendo Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. If you want to make this one yourself, you can download the template and instructions here.

Zora Armour Link - Feet

Starting with the feet, they went together quite well, and the white lines aren’t that noticable.

Zora Armour Link: Legs

Now the legs and manskirt are added. I didn’t glue his left foot on in line with the leg/knee, but its not very noticeable, I think.

Zora Armour Link - Body

His chest and shoulders are added. As with the rest of the model, it went together quite well.
Zora Link - Head

And now his head. I thought the head would be hard, and while it was challenging, it ended up pretty nice.

This is where this model stands right now. Next is the arms and hands (ugh, hands!), then the shield, sword and sheath. I already tried his hands once and stuffed up, and considering it took me three tries to do the hand on regular Link, it might take me a while.

Getting back into the swing of things.

I haven’t blogged in a while, but to be honest, I don’t think anyone noticed. I don’t get that many visitors :p

Anyway the reasons for not blogging are long and boring, so I won’t bore anyone with that. Let’s just say that things are getting back to normal, so I’m getting back into the swing of things.

I just printed out my book, getting ready to send it in to a literary agent. Well, I have a cover letter, 2 page synopsis, and chapters 1, 2 and 5. The synopsis was hard to write, as it is a very plot-heavy book and so many things are integral to the main storyline. Hopefully I have captured the heart of the book in these two pages.

Finally sending my book out is a little scary. On one hand, I’m preparing myself for the inevitable rejection. It always happens, writers have to send their book out to lots of places before finally getting accepted. But the trouble is, there aren’t that many places in Australia that will accept:

  1. A manuscript from an unpublished author
  2. A manuscript from an unrepresented author
  3. A science fiction/ fantasy manuscript

At the moment I only found two places that I could possibly send to. What next? Can I send to international publishers/ agents? I’m not sure how that works. I guess I’ll have to investigate.

Due to my previously mentioned boring personal stuff, I haven’t really been writing later, so I’ve got to get back into that. I have most of the second book mapped out, but there are still a few small details to work out before I set off to write the first draft. I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a good book.

Meanwhile the thing I have been doing is Papercrafting. It’s addictive, and become a hobby I do every day. I have always seen random posts on different places about cool paper models people have made, but never got around to exploring it until now. It’s great to have something to do while watching shows, or grinding skills in Haven and Hearth. Plus, they look great when finished. It’s like making your own action figures. Currently I’m working on Zora Armour Link, and Mario’s Head. I’ll post more about them when I’m closer to finishing. I was also planning to do Young Link from Ocarina of Time, but I stuffed up when I was attaching the hat to his face, so I’ll have to redo that one.

Anyway, my blog should be much more active from now on. I hope it’s interesting to you all :)

Midna from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

For my third papercraft I chose Midna from the Nintendo Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Even though I started this one after I started Twilight Princess Link, I finished her before because she is smaller, with less peices. If you want to make this one yourself, you can download the template and instructions here.

Twilight Princess Midna: Legs

Here’s Midna’s legs and stomach. It was fidly because she’s so small, but it fit together well in the end. She has a flat bum so she sits well.

Twilight Princess Midna: Body and one arm

Here I’ve added her chest, and one arm. As with Link, there are a lot of white lines from the edge of the paper, but in this one they’re more noticeable because she’s so small.

Twilight Princess Midna: Two arms

Now I’ve added the second arm. The hands themselves are just flat pieces that have been curved, so you can see the white behind them.

Twilight Princess Midna: Head and Helmet

Midna’s head, minus the hair, not yet attached to the head.  The head is separate from the mask, but the mask fits fairly well over her head so its’ not going to fall off.

Twilight Princess Midna: Final

The completed Midna! I went okay up until  I got to the hair. You can’t see in this picture but a part of her hair didn’t fit together properly and I got a big hole there. Because of that, and all the white lines, I will redo this model at some point, when I’ve got some more experience under my belt.

Link from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

For my second papercraft I chose Link from the Nintendo Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. If you want to make this one yourself, you can download the template and instructions here.

Twilight Princess Link: Body

I didn’t take any photos until I had done most of the body, as this one seemed more complicated and I wasn’t confident that I could do it properly. But having got to this point, I realised I did a pretty good job. Despite the white lines (which I now know how to get rid of ), it turned out well. The feet are made separate, and then glued onto the legs. The legs are also separate, the bottom half of his armour/tunic is glued on, then his chest glued on top of that.

Twilight Princess Link: One arm

Here’s one arm done. The arms are fairly simple as they’re just a series of cylinders glued together. I didn’t start on the hands yet, as they looked extremely small and complicated (and scary).

Twilight Princess Link: Two arms

Two arms done!

Twilight Princess Link: Finger AND a thumb!

Here’s the beginning of Link’s hand. He has individual fingers, which as you can see, are tiny. I had to use tweezers to stick this together, and getting this far took me three tries. (Meaning, I had to reprint the whole page with his hand parts on it twice extra).

Twilight Princess Link: Hand

His finished hand! I was so glad when I finished one hand! It’s not perfect, but it looks okay and that’s good enough for me! Then… I realised I had to do it all over again for his other hand…

Twilight Princess Link: Hands

His hands have been glued on now. He’s looking pretty good! I use Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive, which is made for paper, to stick the parts together, but when gluing sections together, like hand to arm, or boots to legs, I use superglue just to make sure his hands don’t fall off.

Twilight Princess Link: Hat and Hair

Here’s the beginning of Link’s head. His hat and hair done, now his face. The hat took me two tries – I had to screw up one and start over cause I messed up.

Twilight Princess Link - Head

I finished his head and glued it to his hat/hair, then glued his head on his body. His face was fairly easy, but getting his face to fit properly to his hair and hat was a bit fiddly, I got there in the end though.

Twilight Princess Link: Shield

Here I’ve added a shoulder strap, and two belt/bags on his back that you can’t see because they’re behind his shield. His shield is separate and not glued on at all. His hand actually holds it properly, which is quite cool.

Twilight Princess Link: Sword

Now the sword was hard. Up until this point I had been using 200gsm card stock, but I found it extremely hard to do the fold and glue the tiny tabs in the sword properly with this thick paper. So I switched to 120gsm card stock, which is still thicker than regular printer paper, but thinner than what I was using, and it was perfect.

Twilight Princess Link: Sheath

The sheath was pretty simple actually. It’s covered over (ie: not hollow) so you can’t put the sword inside, but it looks cool on his back.

Twilight Princess Link: Finished!

And finally Link is complete!
