Are video games a flawed medium for storytelling?

For a long, long time I’ve been waiting for a game that puts the story first. A game that can tell a brilliant, engaging story just like a movie, tv show or book. But lately I’m beginning to wonder if that is even possible. Maybe I’m waiting for the impossible?

The latest game I’ve been playing is Heavy Rain. It was publicized as an ‘interactive drama’. It really does put the story first, and yes its a good story. The trouble is, I think this interactivity interferes with the storytelling. If you play it just once, then walk away, then yes you got a good, engaging story. But with the way the story can branch to much, nobody will play it just once.

So you play it a second time, get a different end result, and then your first story is diminished. You realise that there is really no set path for the story to unfold. For me, it ruins the immersion and surprise when you can steer the story in whatever way you want.

Of course, I realise not all games are like this. But still, even in games with linear storylines, the quality of the writing is lacking. Resident Evil games aside, the Survival Horror genre tends to have quite good storylines in their games. I’d probably say Silent Hill is the best at story, but even that too has multiple endings.

So what else? Uncharted 1 and 2 both had interesting linear stories, but I wouldn’t want to read a book about it.

No matter how many games I play, I really can’t think of one that has satisfied me, story-wise, the way a really good book can. Perhaps I should stop looking.

So what makes up an interesting story? Well written characters for a start. Most video game characters are pale, one-dimensional and badly written. But when it’s an action game where all you care about is killing the next alien, it really doesn’t matter how bad the characters are.

Heavy Rain has the best characters so far. They felt like real people, displayed emotion, and were well rounded. But still, it failed on plot. The plot changes so much depending on how you play, and each time you realise that a branch exists, a small part of the magic dies.

The Secret World (insert link here) is a MMO in development that promises to put an emphasis on story. The only other MMO I would say that has a good story is Lord of the Rings Online, and that’s only because it’s based on a story that has already been written. TSW has already revealed a lot of back-story, and currently there is an ARG centred around the New England town of Kingsmouth. Ragnar himself has stated that he wants people to get to know the characters, which is an exciting prospect. But the game is far from release. Can it deliver on story? Who knows… Perhaps being an MMO means it fails on story automatically?

Two games that perhaps come close to having a good story are The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. The trouble is, I haven’t completed The Longest Journey and never played Dreamfall. While the story and characters are good, it’s a basic point and click adventure game, and the boring, illogical puzzles ruin the pacing of the story for me.

That’s another thing, in a story, the pacing is very important. You want the story to flow smoothly, not become too slow or boring, and not move so fast that the reader can’t keep up. But with a game, they can’t control the pacing. Perhaps you’ll get stuck in a puzzle and not advance the story for a few days? Perhaps you’ll skip a few cut scenes? I found the pacing of The Longest Journey too slow, and I got bored. So I stopped playing.

Until now, when a new game comes out the first thing I look for is a good story. I’m always disappointed. I think perhaps I need to change my priorities. Maybe one day I’ll find a game with an exciting, engaging story, but when I do, it’ll be a surprise. I’m not looking for it anymore.

Still Playing:

Rockband for 360

I didn’t play it much this week, hard mode is hard. Perhaps I’ve reached my limit.

Heavy Rain

First, I finished the game. Then the Apolalyps3 happened, and I lost all my Heavy Rain trophies. So I played it through again. Now I’m starting my proper second playthrough. I’m determined to get all the trophies for this one. I haven’t gotten a platinum PS3 trophy yet, so Heavy Rain will be my first.

New Game Purchases:

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom

This is an Xbox Live Arcade game recently released. It’s a side scrolling platformer with a very unique artistic style. You have the ability to record your movements, then play them back with copies of yourself. It’s a bit hard to explain, but it works well and its fun. For a cheap game, its pretty fun, and I highly recommend it.

Still playing:

Rockband for Xbox 360

I got this for my birthday in January and I’m still playing it. The guitar is fun, but after I get to medium I just can’t do the fingering properly and I give up. But with the drums I believe I can actually learn to do it properly! I just finished Medium this week, so I’m moving on to Hard mode. And yes, hard mode is hard. But I think with practice I can actually do it.

Afrika for PS3

This game seems to go on and on and on. I’m still playing it occasionally, but not that often really. I’m almost at my limit.

Assassin’s Creed 2: Bonfire of the Vanities for Xbox 360

This DLC was quite fun. Finally you get to explore the other side of the river in Florence! There are 9 assassinations to complete, so it gave me a nostalgic feeling. Kinda reminded me of AC1 a bit, which was a good thing.

New Game Purchases:

Heavy Rain for PS3

Despite being a little buggy, this is a cool game. I really liked that while waiting to install the game, it instructs you on how to fold a piece of paper (that comes in the game box) into one of those origami thingies from the front cover. The game basically is one big, long quick time event. Now normally I hate those, but considering the entire game is based from the ground up around the concept, it works well. The graphics are good, although the characters are very robotic and not all the voices are actually good. But overall, a fun game. I had a hard time putting the controller down to write this.

Endless Oceans 2 for Nintendo Wii

Going from Heavy Rain to this game is BAD. It makes the graphics look absolutely horrible. I remember Endless Oceans 1 looking okay, but maybe my memory isn’t that great. The game itself is fun, it’s just the graphics that look dated – and that’s Nintendo’s fault for making the Wii too underpowered – but that’s another subject.

Game Wish List!

  1. My ultimate fantasy game would be an MMO. And since this is my ultimate fantasy game, I wouldn’t mind paying a monthly fee for it, cause it’s that good.
  2. It would have no servers or shards, with everyone in the one world. I do not believe in segregation – it’s the major thing that puts me off a lot of MMO’s. A lot of games have one group of servers for Euro’s, and one for American’s. Well I’m in Australia, and I have friends in both places, but they force me to choose one or the other. It pretty much sucks. I want to bring back the MASSIVE in Massively Multiplayer. I want one world with EVERYONE in it!
  3. I want no rules. Everything is allowed, but policed by the players themselves. IE: There would be open PVP, but if you kill another player then you get a bounty on your head, and other players will get a reward if they kill you.
  4. It would have a fantastic, emotional, immersive story. This seems to be lacking in a lot of games. So far I’ve yet to play any game whose story can compare with a really good movie. I have hopes for Heavy Rain, but time will tell.
  5. On a similar note, I want more realistic, complete characters. Game characters have a habit of being one-dimension stereotypes whose personality consists entirely of catch phrases. I want characters who I can get to know – whom I will grow to love or hate. But lately all game characters are just cardboard cutouts.
  6. I like backstory, as long as its relevant to the plot. Dragon Age has a lot of backstory and lore you can read, but I CBF because it has no relevance to the game itself. It’s all just fluff. However in a game like Fatal Frame, or Forbidden Siren, for example, the backstory is important, and only by reading all the notes and journal entries will you understand what’s happening.
  7. No limits on what my character looks like! Since I’ve already said my fantasy game is an MMO, I don’t want to be put into the shoes of someone else. I’m creating and playing my own character, so I want to make him look exactly how I imagine he would look like. So far the games that have the most customizability are City of Heroes and Champions Online, but even then there are limits, such as there are some items that female characters cannot wear, in Champions. I want No Limits! If I want my guy running around in a dress and high heel, then I should be allowed to! If I want him running around in a leather jockstrap and nothing else, then I should be allowed to! Sure, I would expect some strange looks, but MMO’s are about freedom, aren’t they?
  8. I want quests. I know a lot of people don’t like Quest-based MMO’s, but I like having something to do. Quests give me a goal, and make the daily grind feel slightly more important. Now in my fantasy game there wouldn’t be any grind at all, but that’s where the quests come in. If the quests are written well (which ties in to point 2), then it won’t feel like grinding at all. It will feel like an epic quest, just as it should.
  9. I want a world that changes. I’m tired of finding an NPC stranded in a cave, helping them out, only to have them run back inside again a second later. I want the world to change. I want the world to remember what I’ve done, and react accordingly. I want NPC’s to remember who I am!
  10. I want originality! Dragon Age made me realize how much I have missed originality in games. Humans/Elves/Dwarves, etc etc etc… its all been done before. Think of your own stuff for God’s sake! It’s not that hard! I’ve done it!

What’s the most important thing on your game wish list? What do you think of mine? Post your answers in the comments below!

DLC should not be used to fill holes!

Okay, DLC is something that is really getting on my nerve lately.

For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, DLC is DownLoadable Content. It’s when you buy a game, then later you can purchase extra missions, and other things, to extend the game. In theory it’s a good idea. In practice, some game developers are taking it a little too far.

Take Assassin’s Creed 2 for example. The game is divided up into Memory Blocks, and there are 14 in all. But when you get to Memory 12 and 13, they are mysteriously corrupt, and it skips over to 14. You never get to play 12 and 13 in the main game. Now, they have announced that you can purchase 2 DLC’s that will fill up the 12 and 13 space in the game.

Now I don’t mind the idea of extending a game past the end, but to deliberately leave a gaping hole in the middle of the game is just petty. They are hoping that people will want to fill a hole (because nature abhors a vacuum), and it would entice people to play the game. In fact, they even admitted that these missions were supposed to be in the original game, but were cut for various reasons (time, money, etc). I understand the need to cut things from a game, but as a writer, I also understand that you don’t leave big holes in your product!

I’ve had to cut plenty of things out from my stories, but I would never leave my book with Chapter 11 going on to Chapter 14 – then later make people pay to read Chapters 12 and 13. Its idiotic, and ruins the story. They could have (and should have) quite easily renamed the missions so that when playing, you wouldn’t even notice there was a hole, then released DLC that EXTENDED the game. Extend is the key word here. The AC2 DLC does not extend anything, it just fills in a hole that should never have been there in the first place.

Another good example is Dragon Age: Origin. In this game, when you make camp there is a character standing right at the edge of your camp offering you a quest. The trouble is you need to pay extra to access that quest. As I said, I don’t mind purchasing extra quests and such, but I don’t want a character in my game telling me I need to pay real world money. It breaks the immersion of a game when a character tells me I need to download extra content (and pay for it) in order to help him with his problem.

It’s the equivalent of this:

Dilemma walked through the door. “Hey reader,” she said. “If you want to find out what happens in this room, you need to purchase the ‘Dilemma in the Room’ expansion story, available now for the low price of $10”.

I don’t mind buying DLC, but it needs to be ‘extra’ content, not filling in holes!

Giving up Giving up Gaming

Okay, I tried. I really did, but I just can’t give up my gaming. I guess I really am addicted to gaming.

But is that a bad thing? It doesn’t really interfere with my life. I get my work done regardless. But still, I don’t really like the thought of being addicted to anything.

I’ll still try to go for one day without gaming, but it won’t be any time soon.

I’ll keep you posted.

Giving up Gaming for 24 Hours

I want to record here and now that I will give up gaming for 24 Hours. I will start tomorrow morning, and play no games all day, Friday November 6 (AU).

I am doing this because lately gaming has taken up too much time that I’d rather spend writing, or cleaning. I really need to clean the house, but its hard to tear myself away from Borderlands (my current gaming obsession).

So to test myself, I’m going to avoid playing any games for a period of 24 hours, and see how I go. To be honest, I tried this before, then I woke up and completely forgot. I was playing games 5 minutes after waking up. Now I’m not saying I’m addicted to gaming, but it is getting in the way of other things I’d like to do.

It’s an experiment. I’ll post my thoughts tomorrow, and then my final results the day after. If I actually make it, then next time I’ll try 2 days. I admit, I think I can go one day without gaming, but I’m not sure if I can go longer. But life would be boring if we didn’t challenge ourselves.

I’ll let you know how I go. :D
