One thing at a time

I’ve decided to put my exercise on hold for a while. I’m not stopping completely, I’m just going to stop regular exercise. I’ll exercise if I feel like it, but not every day.

I’ve been feeling very tired and run down lately, and I think it’s because I tried to do too many things at once. Now, I’m just concentrating on developing better eating habits, and keeping the house clean (which for me, is a challenge). I’ve got to do one thing at a time, so when I’ve got a handle on my eating, I’ll get a handle on my exercise.

I enjoyed it for the first two months, but lately it’s been feeling like a chore, and I had to force myself to exercise. So I’m listening to my body, and not doing it now. I already feel better now, knowing that I don’t have to dread my exercise coming up. When I’m ready, I’ll start again, and I’ll enjoy it more because it will be the right time to do it.

My list of possible names

I have always enjoyed using unusual words for the names of my characters. For example, two of the main characters in my novel are Dilemma, and Ocean. I have kept this list of possible names for a long time, and pick from it whenever I want something a little different. I decided to post it, because it might provide someone with some inspiration.

Are video games a flawed medium for storytelling?

For a long, long time I’ve been waiting for a game that puts the story first. A game that can tell a brilliant, engaging story just like a movie, tv show or book. But lately I’m beginning to wonder if that is even possible. Maybe I’m waiting for the impossible?

The latest game I’ve been playing is Heavy Rain. It was publicized as an ‘interactive drama’. It really does put the story first, and yes its a good story. The trouble is, I think this interactivity interferes with the storytelling. If you play it just once, then walk away, then yes you got a good, engaging story. But with the way the story can branch to much, nobody will play it just once.

So you play it a second time, get a different end result, and then your first story is diminished. You realise that there is really no set path for the story to unfold. For me, it ruins the immersion and surprise when you can steer the story in whatever way you want.

Of course, I realise not all games are like this. But still, even in games with linear storylines, the quality of the writing is lacking. Resident Evil games aside, the Survival Horror genre tends to have quite good storylines in their games. I’d probably say Silent Hill is the best at story, but even that too has multiple endings.

So what else? Uncharted 1 and 2 both had interesting linear stories, but I wouldn’t want to read a book about it.

No matter how many games I play, I really can’t think of one that has satisfied me, story-wise, the way a really good book can. Perhaps I should stop looking.

So what makes up an interesting story? Well written characters for a start. Most video game characters are pale, one-dimensional and badly written. But when it’s an action game where all you care about is killing the next alien, it really doesn’t matter how bad the characters are.

Heavy Rain has the best characters so far. They felt like real people, displayed emotion, and were well rounded. But still, it failed on plot. The plot changes so much depending on how you play, and each time you realise that a branch exists, a small part of the magic dies.

The Secret World (insert link here) is a MMO in development that promises to put an emphasis on story. The only other MMO I would say that has a good story is Lord of the Rings Online, and that’s only because it’s based on a story that has already been written. TSW has already revealed a lot of back-story, and currently there is an ARG centred around the New England town of Kingsmouth. Ragnar himself has stated that he wants people to get to know the characters, which is an exciting prospect. But the game is far from release. Can it deliver on story? Who knows… Perhaps being an MMO means it fails on story automatically?

Two games that perhaps come close to having a good story are The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. The trouble is, I haven’t completed The Longest Journey and never played Dreamfall. While the story and characters are good, it’s a basic point and click adventure game, and the boring, illogical puzzles ruin the pacing of the story for me.

That’s another thing, in a story, the pacing is very important. You want the story to flow smoothly, not become too slow or boring, and not move so fast that the reader can’t keep up. But with a game, they can’t control the pacing. Perhaps you’ll get stuck in a puzzle and not advance the story for a few days? Perhaps you’ll skip a few cut scenes? I found the pacing of The Longest Journey too slow, and I got bored. So I stopped playing.

Until now, when a new game comes out the first thing I look for is a good story. I’m always disappointed. I think perhaps I need to change my priorities. Maybe one day I’ll find a game with an exciting, engaging story, but when I do, it’ll be a surprise. I’m not looking for it anymore.

Still Playing:

Rockband for 360

I didn’t play it much this week, hard mode is hard. Perhaps I’ve reached my limit.

Heavy Rain

First, I finished the game. Then the Apolalyps3 happened, and I lost all my Heavy Rain trophies. So I played it through again. Now I’m starting my proper second playthrough. I’m determined to get all the trophies for this one. I haven’t gotten a platinum PS3 trophy yet, so Heavy Rain will be my first.

New Game Purchases:

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom

This is an Xbox Live Arcade game recently released. It’s a side scrolling platformer with a very unique artistic style. You have the ability to record your movements, then play them back with copies of yourself. It’s a bit hard to explain, but it works well and its fun. For a cheap game, its pretty fun, and I highly recommend it.

Heavy Rain

  1. It’s very buggy, though with a few quick patches they can fix that.
  2. It’s not an action packed game.
  3. It focuses on story, and although there are a few plot holes (holes they can and probably will fix with DLC), the story is solid and engaging.
  4. It’s basically one big long quick time event.
  5. The characters are well designed, well acted, and well written.
  6. The loading screen has an extreme close up on one of the characters staring at you, and its very freak and annoying.
  7. You really can influence the story by your actions.
  8. Your characters can die, but only at certain points.
  9. Graphics are excellent, best I’ve seen in a long time.
  10. I was surprised when I found out who the killer was. No recent game has ever surprised me.

The Rules of being a good Customer

I wrote this in 2003 when I was still working in a shop doing customer service (Dick Smith Powerhouse at Penrith).

1.  DO NOT ask for a receipt.  They print out automatically and you will get one whether you like it or not.

2.  DO wash yourself before entering a shop, and putting on some clean clothes won’t go astray.

3.  DO NOT talk on your mobile phone while purchasing items, it is very rude.

4a.  DO remember your post code!  If you have recently moved to a new area, you are exempt from this rule for a period of 2 months.
4b.  DO NOT say “Gee, I never write letters to myself!” when you cannot remember you post code.  You have to write your address on the back of the envelope anyway, not to mention the numerous forms you have to fill out nowadays.

5.  DO NOT fold you notes.  This rule may or may not apply to people in countries other than Australia, it depends on what your notes are made of.  Australian Notes are made of plastic, and sit horribly in the till when the customers fold them up.

6.  DO check the prices of things before you pick them off the shelf.  If they scan at the wrong price, the register operator has no way of knowing.

(these rules are subject to change at any time and without notice)

Having said this, I don’t follow this last rule. I never check prices, but I never complain about the price either, so I’m still a good customer!

Still playing:

Rockband for Xbox 360

I got this for my birthday in January and I’m still playing it. The guitar is fun, but after I get to medium I just can’t do the fingering properly and I give up. But with the drums I believe I can actually learn to do it properly! I just finished Medium this week, so I’m moving on to Hard mode. And yes, hard mode is hard. But I think with practice I can actually do it.

Afrika for PS3

This game seems to go on and on and on. I’m still playing it occasionally, but not that often really. I’m almost at my limit.

Assassin’s Creed 2: Bonfire of the Vanities for Xbox 360

This DLC was quite fun. Finally you get to explore the other side of the river in Florence! There are 9 assassinations to complete, so it gave me a nostalgic feeling. Kinda reminded me of AC1 a bit, which was a good thing.

Heavy Rain for PS3

Despite being a little buggy, this is a cool game. I really liked that while waiting to install the game, it instructs you on how to fold a piece of paper (that comes in the game box) into one of those origami thingies from the front cover. The game basically is one big, long quick time event. Now normally I hate those, but considering the entire game is based from the ground up around the concept, it works well. The graphics are good, although the characters are very robotic and not all the voices are actually good. But overall, a fun game. I had a hard time putting the controller down to write this.

Endless Oceans 2 for Nintendo Wii

Going from Heavy Rain to this game is BAD. It makes the graphics look absolutely horrible. I remember Endless Oceans 1 looking okay, but maybe my memory isn’t that great. The game itself is fun, it’s just the graphics that look dated – and that’s Nintendo’s fault for making the Wii too underpowered – but that’s another subject.

Drop and give me twenty!

Not that anyone would ever say that, but if they did, I can actually do it now!

This week I didn’t do much exercise really. I did some light cardio on a few days, but mainly I wanted to concentrate on cleaning the house, and it seems I always use exercise as an excuse not to clean, so I gave myself a week off.

Instead I wanted to test myself, to see if I’ve actually gotten any fitter since starting my quest.

On New Years Eve, I could only do 8 pushups until I was exhausted. And to be honest, they were lame pushups. I couldn’t do a proper one at all.

But on Wednesday I did 20 perfect pushups! In a row! With no break! Okay, at the end I almost collapsed, but so what? I DID 20 PUSHUPS! I’ve never been able to do that! My next goal is 30 pushups in a row!

As for sit-ups, I could only do 15, and I really don’t remember what I was able to do before, so I can’t compare that. Same with squats – I did 20 in a row, but I have nothing to compare them too.

So my new mini-goals are now: 30 pushups, 20 Sit-ups, and 30 Squats. I’d like to add Chin-ups to the mix, but I have no-where to do them. They’re an exercise you need equipment for, and I have none.

Next week I want to get back into doing more vigorous exercise, as I think I’ve been too light on myself these last few weeks. But overall I’m still feeling good, and it’s obviously doing me good since I’m still improving, so I’m happy.

10 Thoughts on Afrika for PS3

Afrika

  1. It’s a game where you take photos of animals. If that sound boring, then you won’t like it. But if you want a nice, relaxing change of pace, then maybe you should pick this up.
  2. It’s basically a land version of Endless Oceans for Nintendo Wii.
  3. You take photos of wild animals around Afrika. You receive missions via in-game email. Some missions are fairly basic, like photograph a giraffe or zebra, others are a little more complicated – such as photograph two lions fighting, or snap an alligator as it attacks a buffalo.
  4. The game world is fairly large, with five separate zones to explore.
  5. You get a jeep to drive around the land. Controls are not perfect, but then, this isn’t a racing game, so it doesn’t have to be.
  6. One particularly annoying thing is that occasionally your partner will decide that he/she wants to drive, and they drive incredibly slowly.
  7. Graphics are great. The world is beautiful, although occasionally the frame-rate suffers. Animal animations at a distance look very robotic, but up close are great.
  8. It’s a very slow-paced game, which is why most people probably won’t like it.
  9. Afrika feels like a VERY long game. For the last few weeks I’ve felt like I must be near the end, but it just keeps going and going and going. Normally this would be a good thing, but it’s getting a little boring, to be honest. It’s a little too long.
  10. Overall, I would only recommend Afrika if you like other, similar games. But if the sound of it puts you off, then avoid it.
